I Asked Before the Mountain Did

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port · 18–19 June 2024

What devil is happening within the depths of my soul?

A backpack and trekking poles resting against a bench by a stone wall, a coffee cup beside it

I’m ready,
I’m ready,
I’m ready…

A weeping willow trailing into a shallow river among green trees
But even the willow needs a place to cry.
Small wildflowers growing from the cracks of an ancient stone rampart
She found a way through the cracks. Maybe so will I.
An old bistro table and chairs against a weathered door, a cat dozing on one seat
Siesta… everywhere.
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port seen from above, red-roofed houses in a green valley beneath the Pyrenees
The path was there all along, I only needed to look up.

Donibane Garazi.
Quiet.
Blue.

A cobblestone alley at blue hour leading to a lit bell tower
A pilgrim's credential stamped for day one, beside a scallop shell and Saint Christopher medal

On y va!
